Oscars 2014

So awards season is officially over, sad times! Here are my picks of the 86th Oscars…

Just click on the picture to make it larger.

However, I think these fab ladies win hands down for the accolade of BEST DRESSED, not only for this years Oscars, but for the entire awards season! For both gals I literally gasped, and WOWED, oohhhed and ahhhed. They both just look so so stunning…

Kelly-Osbourne-and-Kate-Hudson-Oscars-2014

Kelly Osbourne wore a Badgley Mischka dress, whilst Kate Hudson draped herself in Alteir Versace.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!

I think it’s become clear, not only through this post but my other award posts, that I am partial to a creamy, goldy, embroidered gown; why not remind yourself of all my other best dressed celebs …

Emmys, Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Grammys, BAFTA’s!

The Boys

Jared-Leto-Oscars-2014

Jared Leto aka ‘Best Supporting Actor for Dallas Buyers Club’, wore Saint Laurent, I especially loved his spangly buttons!

An Afterthought…

My initial feeling to Cate Blanchett’s dress was “it’s pretty, but I’ve seen better”. However, after watching some highlights (the actual show was 1:30-4:00am on a Sunday night – not sure my boss would have been happy with me Monday morning) and seeing Ryan Seacrest chatting with her, I decided that actually she looked absolutely gorgeous. I think this is enhanced through the fact that she simply oozes loveliness – she just seems so kind and genuine! But also her skin, (oh my!) and her hair, she literally shines, and because she’s made my picks in each award post I couldn’t not include her here, I think she’s worthy ; )

The Double Cleanse

image

Now this is all relatively new to me, silly really, seeing as it’s really very logical!

But the double cleanse is literally cleansing, twice! WOW!

Obviously the more you clean anything the cleaner it becomes, but I think the thing that hit me when I found out about this pretty standard beauty process, is how much cleansing once doesn’t really clean your face at all. Obviously yes it takes off your make-up, mostly. But if the cotton pad / cloth is covered in your day old make-up how can it clean your skin and pores? How have I never thought about this before?!

I suppose It’s a bit like when you go to the hairdressers, they always shampoo twice; once to clean your hair, and the second one to clean your scalp. But who actually does this at home? I mean sometimes I’m REALLY bad, usually after a night out and I simply just can’t wait to get into bed, so don’t take my make-up off at all (I know awful), let alone do the whole routine twice.

But in fact I now quite look forward to this little process, granted it’s usually in the week when I go to bed at a reasonable hour. But it feels like I’m pampering myself a little!

First I use Clarins Instant Make-up Remover, which is SO amazing for removing eye make-up – even waterproof mascara, or Bioderma Micelle Solution, which is completely refreshing – I’m actually really looking forward to using this in the summer – so one of these two products on two cotton pads and then I just gently hold them over my eyes for about 20-30 seconds, I do get a little impatient so have to do a bit of wiping, but if you can last a bit longer the make-up just melts off.

I then wipe these over my face. first cleanse done – if you can call it a cleanse now?!

Then I use a cream cleanser, at the moment I have three on rotation; Clarins Cleansing Milk, Liz Earles Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser, or a Superdrug dupe of the latter product called Vitamin E Skin Care Hot Cloth Cleanser (honestly I can’t tell the difference between these last two at all). I rub this all over, and into my face and neck, and try and give a really good massage of this into the skin to get the blood flowing – again this depends on how lazy I’m feeling. Then I simply “polish” it off with the muslin cloth supplied with both the Hot Cloth Cleansers, or a flannel. Second cleanse done.

I do like to give a quick wipe over my face with the rinsed cloth/flannel once more, but as this is already in my hands and the water’s running it literally takes around 10 seconds – not sure I can count that as a third cleanse?!

Go on give it a try, you won’t believe how clean and refreshed your skin feels. To test this you can use your normal method of taking your make-up off, then with a cotton pad add some more cleanser and run it over your face – if it comes back brilliantly white then kudos to you, but chances are you’ll be doubling up every night of the week!

For loads more tips on skin care check out either Caroline Hirons or Lisa Eldridge’s blogs! Although I warn you – they’re much more strict than I am, which I suppose is why they literally sparkle!

Which are your favourite cleansers?

My Pick of the BAFTAs 2014…

Did anyone watch the BAFTA’s last night? I sat in front of my TV with my notebook and iPad (following E! Online UK on Twitter), eagerly awaiting for the Red Carpet coverage to start with Dermot and Fearne. I have to say I was a little disappointed. It’s no secret that I haven’t been bowled over by this year’s award season, as mentioned here, however, last night it wasn’t  the catwalk – who are they kidding – but the lack of coverage.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love Fearne and Dermot, both individually and as a duo, and it was obvious that they “grabbed” everyone they could. But quite a few people slipped through the net. After a bit of research this morning I realise that quite a few people arrived early – that’s just annoying! Half of the gals below I didn’t see strut their stuff – is this not an opportunity missed!? I think so, even if it wasn’t to show case your dress, surely you’d want to “accidently” bump into Leo, or Fassbender, or TOM HARDY! Although he’s another one that I didn’t realise was there until he popped up to present the Best Leading Actress award.

Oh well, here are my picks…

Photos from Vogue.co.uk, Grazia Daily and Contact Music

Pictures from Left to Right: Lupita Nyong’o in a Christian Dior Couture dress and Ana Khouri jewellery, Claudia Winkleman in Alice Temperley, Imogen Poots in Givenchy, Olga Kurylenko in Burberry, Fearne Cotton in William Vintage, Rebecca Wang, Rita Wilson in Jenny Packham, Hofit Golan, Sara McDonald, Maggie Gyllenhaal in Lanvin, Laura Haddock in Burberry, Alicia Vikander in Chanel, Helen McCrory, Cate Blanchett in Alexander McQueen and Chopard jewelry, Amy Adams in Victoria Beckham, Uma Thurman in Atelier Versace.

Granted I have had no idea who half of this bunch were, but they looked bloomin’ lovely! And in the interest of being thorough I did a lil’ bit of rsearch for y’all…

Imogen Poots – Actress in Casualty, 28 Weeks Later, V for Vandetta tpo name a few – she has a couple of films out this year! Olga Kurylenko – Quantum of Solice (how did I not recognise her). Rebecca Wang – producer. Hofit Golan – Israel’s answer to Paris Hilton apparently. Sara McDonald Noel Gallaghers wife. Illamasqua Product Review…

DSC_0003
I finally bought myself some bits from the much raved about beauty brand Illamasqua. I had a look around their website and saw that their sale was pretty good, which I’ve heard is generally the case, especially in January. Thus I thought it would be the perfect time for to get aquainted!

So what did I buy…

Light Liquid Foundation – LF 140

It’s always dangerous to buy a foundation without it being matched to your skin colour/tone/type in real life, but Illamasqua have this pretty nifty chart, which tells you which shade you’d be in relation to other brands. For example most beauty fanatics will know their MAC shade off the top of their head, so you simply look this up on the chart, scan over to the right and there you have your illamasqua shade – genius! Unfortunately I now simply cannot find this AT ALL! I’ll keep trying and leave a link if I have any luck!

Now this is not to say that the shades will be the same as whichever brand you’re accustomed. The Illamasuqa shade was lighter, with a more yellow tone to it that my standard MAC NW20, but it was still right for me.

The consistencey is another factor I had to get used to, much thinner than my usual aforementioned MAC foundation, which I wasn’t worried about, however, it was very hard to blend and felt like I was just moving it around my face, rather than actually cover anything.

On the plus side, when you decide enough is enough and hope that it will not move around your face, it does leave a lovely dewy finish, another first for me, in comparison to my Studio Fix, which was very nice indeed. But this then felt tacky all day, and like I would remove it if I touched my face at all.

I’m glad I tried this when the price was marked down as honestly I wouldn’t buy this again, and in fact I’m finding it hard to even want to use it all – simply because of how it seems to just sit on my skin. Yet this isn’t to say that I wouldn’t try a different foundation formula from them, as I’ve heard some rave reviews, but I have a few others that I want to try way before I have another go with Illamasqua.

Left to Right: Concealor 115, Concealor 130, Light Liquid Foundation LW 140

2 x Concealors/Correctors – 115 and 130

I’m not usually one for buying different shades of concealors, however, due to the price (£7 each) and again the fact that I was buying online and wasn’t 100% sure on how the shades etc would look, I went for the two above.

Again unfortunately I don’t have much to shout about with these, I’ve only really used the lighter one, as I have dark circles and like to brighten up the area, and would only really use the darker one for blemishes etc.

The consistency is pretty similar to that of Benefit’s Boing, which is quite thick, and what I like to think of as a “tapping in” concealor rather than a rub or blend one. This means that anything more than literally warming it and tapping it in to the skin will remove it. This isn’t really a problem to me, as as long as it covers what needs to be covers then it’s all good in my book. Which it did, cover I mean. The problem was that then it would start to crack and all my fine lines would start to expose themselves -yep I have dark circles, and “liney” undereyes, which then looked almost crepey and cakey. And this was after applying eye cream as well.

Liquid Eyeliner Precision Ink – Abyss – Full Price

I was really excited about this as I wear liquid eyeliner every day, I feel naked without it, and I’ve just ran out of the one I’ve been using, Clinque Eye Defining Liquid Liner (review to come). I also saw that Megan from Wonderful You (another avid liquid liner fan) uses this regularly, and it looks fab on her!

So after all of this anticipation I was rather disappointed to find that it wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. The nib is long, and definitely the best part of the product, really easy to use and has the ability to create small every day flicks, or sexy 60’s style feline eyes.

And the colour, initially, is really black and seems like it’s going to be the best thing ever. However, when it dries it looks like you could almost peel it off. It goes quite shiny and then flakes. It also rubs off on your upper eye lids, which obviously just looks awful. I think if the longevity was better I could deal with the shiny aspect of this! Literally gutted!

Medium Pencil for eyes, lips, face, and body – Debonair

I have yet to try this out, but from the swatch it seems quite pigmented, and easy to apply. I have to admit i thought this was a standard eyeliner, it didn’t realise it was multi-talented! A plus!

DSC_0014Left to Right: Liquid Eyeliner Precision Ink in Abyss, Medium Pencil in Debonair

So all in all I haven’t had the best of luck with this brand, and honestly I’m peeved! I thought everything would just be amazing! I’m not throwing in the towel just yet though, I must be doing something wrong?!

What has your experience been with Illamasqua? Have you used any of these products? I’d love to know your thoughts!

My Pick of the SAG Awards 2014

So you may have realised that it’s awards season! No? WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN HIDING? Well don’t fret, I’m going to try and bring you the best of all the major award ceremonies coming up in the next month and a bit. Click here to see my picks of the bestest dresses from the 71st Golden Globes!

Now I do apologise, as this one is a couple of days late, so I’ll get straight into it…Best-of

From top Left: Breaking Bads Anna Gunn in Monique Lhuillier with Iarene Neuwirth jewellery and an Edie Parker clutch. Kelly Osbourne wears pleated gown by Zac Posen, a Colette diamond handcuff and Le Vian Diamond ring. Amy Adams in a blue/purple one shoulder dress by Antonio Beradi and Jimmy Choos. Boardwalk Empire actress Gretchen Mol wears a mesh bodice gown by J.Mendel. New Girl actress Hannah Simone in Marchesa, a Ferragamo clutch, Casadei shoes and jewelry by Neil Lane and Dionea Orcini. Oprah Winfrey wears a ruched purple long sleeved Badgley Mischka gown. Isla Fisher accessorises her Oscar de la Renta gown with a Ferragamo box clutch, Bulgari jewelry and Christian Louboutin shoes. Maria Menounos in a Rani Zakhem gown. Julia Roberts wears a bespoke  wide-leg Valentino jumpsuit with silver earrings and silver Roger Vivier clutch. Malin Ackermann in a beaded black, gold and nude gown by Naeem Khan and the  Jimmy Choo sandals. Jennifer Lawrence wears a strapless sequinned gown by Dior. Tina Fey also in a Oscar de la Renta gown, with black and gold Roger Vivier Cerniera clutch, Van Cleef & Arpels diamond earrings and ring.

So did anyone make it into both my Golden Globes, and SAG Awards picks? Well yes, these two…

GG-and-SA-Best-of12 Years A Slave actress Lupita Nyong’o is rocking it in a gorgeous turquoise gown by Gucci with an elaborate floral neckline and Fred Leighton jewellery. This girl knows how to don’ some pretty bright colours, and the cut is just perfect! And Cate Blanchett looks stunning in a soft pink dress by Givenchy, Chopard jewelry and Roger Vivier shoes. Now I have seen that this look has been hit or miss with some fashion critics, which, to an extent, I do understand, the draped detail is a little odd. However, I think she looks really feminine and it’s a completely different look and style to her golden globes ensemble, so bonus points from me for mixing it up!

I can’t decide if this next dress is my favourite of them all, or if it’s just the one that I would like to wear most – I’m also not sure if these are the same thing??

rs_634x1024-140118161019-634_Elisabeth-Rohm-SAG-Awards_jl_011814_copyBut it’s Elisabeth Rohm in a delicate and so so gorgeous Marchesa lace and embroidered gown! So pretty!!

It’s time for the BOYS : )

and another celeb who features in both my top picks (for the Golden Globes, and SAG Awards)…

BoysJared Leto dons a black Dior suit with a white bow tie and polka-dot pocket square, and looks completely drool worthy! As does Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington in a very gentlemanly suit. James Marsden sported a Valentino suit in navy, and rocks a paisley pocket square. Whilst Matthew McConaughey impresses again in a black printed Dolce & Gabbana suit.

Now for a little extra; one of THE best TV programs ever went home empty handed, but I think we can safely see that they have made a huge impression on the fashion world – even having a secured a space in the boys section! But “here come the girls'”…

GOTNatalie Dormer – Margaery Tyrell looked effortlessly cool with her half-shaven do’ and edgy Marios Schwab dress. Lena Headey – Cersei Lannister wore a bold Jenny Packham gown. Sophie Turner – Sansa Stark wears a simple yet striking Dolce & Gabbana dress. And finally Carice Van Houten – Melisandre opted for a short Christian Dior dress teamed with lush red lips.

So, once again, which are your faves? Yeh yeh I know the boys ; p
